PERU in July 2010, Photography Safari and workshop
Apr 27th
Next year I will be going on Safari in July and you are all welcome to come along. There are two trips to choose from or you can combine them both. The first is a hands on 5 day workshop that includes photographing amazing Peru, as well going into greater depths about the art of photography, image making and master printing. Following the workshop is a wonderful 11 day safari around Peru and the Incas to some of the most breathtaking places on earth.
The trip is designed for all levels and genres of photography, from keen amateurs through to professionals. I will be sharing my experiences from the past 15 years photographing majestic landscapes and beautiful people. It really doesn’t matter what kind of photographer you are – there is so much to learn on a trip like this that can be applied to any genre of photography.

Queensland Photographic Awards Success
Apr 23rd
I promised to post more of Adam’s award winning images, so here they are….
This man is a fantastic wedding photographer, but these images to me, show his brilliance as a photographic storyteller whatever the subject.
This portfolio saw Adam awarded 2009 Queensland Illustrative Photographer of the Year. The Illustrative category is a particularly challenging one as it brings together the creative and technical aspects of art photography. These images really show off Adam’s innate ability to use the available light, and his strength in post production and printing techniques. What I love most though is how he brings them together to finish his vision and get his message across to the viewer.
I should also say that not only did Adam take out the Illustrative Category, he was runner up in 2009 Queensland Landscape Photographer of the Year, and runner up in the Open Category at the awards, and was invited to judge a number of categories during the awards.
Adams winning Portfolio:
The image below was awarded Silver with Distinction.
My favourite below & Adam’s summation of social problems in the US. This one was awarded a Gold.
A Silver award winner….
And Adam will hate me for posting this – but here he is accepting his award (left) from current Qld AIPP President (& owner of Vivid Photography) Richard Muldoon.
Wedding Fashion at Gianni’s Portside
Apr 22nd
The Cocktails, Carats & Couture event we held at Gianni’s Events Portside, also showcased some of DARB’s beautiful dresses, so while we are celebrating Brad’s NRA win, I thought I’d post some pics of the fashion parade that our brides at Cocktails, Carats & Couture were treated too.
Here is one of Brad’s dresses close up, along with some beautiful table styling courtesy of Brendan at Styled Events. This man, knows how to bring bling to a big day. I’ve often thought his business should be called “Stylish Events” because that’s what they always are.
The fab fashion show……
2009 NRA Fashion awards
Apr 22nd
In my last post I mentioned the great night Penny & I had at the NRA Fashion Awards, as guests of our good friend Brad Webb of DARB Bridal Couture. Here are a few more of my personal snaps from the night, starting with Brad, the Supreme Award Winner (that is actually the name of the award), on stage with his winning bridal dress and his HUGE trophy.
For those photographers out there…. all these were shot on my Canon G10 – perfect for keeping in your suit pocket until just the right moment……
Doesn’t this baby shine…….
The Australian Idols, Jessica Mauboy (below) & Wes Carr provided entertainment. Have to say the zoom on this little camera is pretty good. We were sitting way at the back of the room yet I could still get some great shots of the stage without even leaving my seat.
Wes Carr belting it out for the big finale.
Easter, Awards, Cocktails and Royalty
Apr 16th
Happy Easter! Can you believe that Easter has already come and gone? I have to admit I’m kind of glad that the incessant questions about the Easter bunny from my 5 year old have now finished, and I only have the chocolate rationing to deal with. How great it is to see the joy on their faces from such simple things like a half eaten carrot left by the Easter Bunny.
I can’t believe it has been almost a month since I last posted. Despite being a little embarrassed by this, when I look at what has been going on this month, I can see where all the time has gone. There are so many things to tell you about. 2009 really has gotten off to an exciting start.
Cocktails, Carats & Couture
As soon as we returned from WPPI, Adam and I attended the Luxury Wedding Event – Cocktails, Carats and Couture at Gianni’s Portside (image from the fashion parade above). This is an annual event (only in its second year) that we have been co-hosting with DARB Bridal Couture and Gianni’s, in an effort to showcase to brides-to-be some of what we feel are the best wedding specialists that Queensland has to offer. We have been photographing weddings for a long time now, and as any wedding photographer would know, you really do get to know a bit about who does great invites/cakes/entertainment and all those other things associated with weddings. Cocktails, Carats & Couture brings together some of the suppliers that Gianni’s, DARB and ourselves have consistently recommended to our brides over the years, so that they can see the quality of their work for themselves. This is no bridal expo, instead we put on a stylish cocktail party, fashion parade, band and canapes, with some info available for anyone that wants to know more. This year’s event was a roaring success, with all our guests having a great time. See below for some snaps from the event. More are available at www.cccweddings.com.au Looking forward to next year!
Also over the last three months we have been working on a project for the RBWH Foundation - a book titled “Royal Mums – A Collection of Memories”. There is so much to say about this book that I’ll have to put it in a few different posts with some of images from the 130+ shoots we have done since January. The RBWH Foundation has commenced the Royal Mums program that recognises all the women that have had their babies at the RBWH since it opened in 1938. My wife Penny had our premature twins there in 2005 and we have the RBWH to thank for their lives. In thanks, we donated our services to photograph over 100 Royal Mums and their families to feature in the book – alongside the story of their RBWH experience. All proceeds from sales of the book go directly to the RBWH Foundation to raise money for perinatal research and to purchase equipment for the neonatal intensive care and special care nurseries. It has been an amazing experience for our team. Some days seemed like a day care in the studio and others saw us all shed a few tears with mums whose stories were inspiring and at times tragic. We also had the chance to photograph a few well known Queensland identities – including Royal Mum, Colleen Origliasso and her family including twins – “The Veronicas”. In the images above you can see me doing ‘my thing’ and the resultant shot. Some days my job is a real joy. How great that this super busy family take time out to help us raise money that will save the lives of newborn babies across Queensland!
I really want to acknowledge Nicola Poole our portrait photographer who did an amazing job on this project. Our thanks also go to some very generous friends of ours who donated their time to photograph Royal Mums no longer in Brisbane – Bec & Ricky at Ricky England Photography in Rockhampton, Graeme Munro at GM Photographics in Sydney and to Dominic at Pine Creek Pictures, Cairns, for the beautiful images they took for us and the Foundation - completely donating their time and all associated costs. Watch this space for more Royal Mum shoots.
On another topic, we like everyone else in Queensland, have been preparing for the AIPP Queensland State Photography Awards. A HUGE congratulations to Adam Finch who I am proud to say took out the Queensland Illustrative Photographer of the Year title with some of his shots from our trip to the US. Here is my favourite (above).
We’ll do another post soon with his award winning shots telling you a little more about them.
Not to be outdone, Penny & I were invited last week to the glitz and glam of the NRA Fashion Awards where we rubbed shoulders with the beautiful people and celebrated with spot of bubbly as Brad Webb from DARB Bridal Couture took out the Supreme Award. Congratulations Brad – well deserved and thank you for letting us share such a great night with you. Here he is with the winner’s trophy and the gown that got the gold!
