Queensland Photography Awards
Apr 27th
Last week the annual Queensland AIPP Photography Awards were held, with a full weekend of judging, culminating in a black tie awards dinner to announce the lucky recipients. This years awards were again a success with some really stunning work on display. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Queensland AIPP Committee for making this event such a success.
Photographers of course, are familiar with these awards, but for those of you that aren’t professional photographers, these awards are put on each year by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography - first State awards and then at a National level (to be held later this year in June).
QAPPA, as it is affectionately known, is an opportunity for photographers to put their stuff out there anonymously, to be judged by others in their industry. It is a great opportunity for newcomers to the industry to compare their work. It is also an opportunity for not-so-newcomers, like me, to see if we still have the goods.
One of the newcomers, is our very own Karen Pedwell, who joined Studio Impressions early this year after completing her Bachelor of Photography. Karen blew us all away with a truly beautiful portfolio that gained her the title of 2010 Queensland Photographic Artist of the Year. Here she is accepting her award from the one and only Ian Poole. We couldn’t be more proud!
This time I took the chance to submit some of new landscapes I’ve been doing and I’m really excited to say they got me 2010 Queensland Landscape Photographer of the Year. Here’s one of the images from the winning folio…….
Chris Knoblauch from Sterling Studios took out Queensland Professional Photographer of the Year with some stunning wedding work. Well done Chris! Winners of each category can be found on the Qld AIPP website.

Mother’s Day Appeal
Apr 17th
Mother’s Day is fast approaching and I don’t know about you, but I am frantically trying to think of a gift, from my boys of course, that will suit their mum. Nothing seems to even come close to saying thanks for all she has done this last year.
Something that I can’t give Penny, but is available to everyone else, is the ultimate way to say thanks to their mum. This year we have joined forces with the RBWH Foundation, 97.3FM and the Sunday Mail, to say Thanks to some of Brisbane’s most deserving mums, and raise much needed funds for perinatal research. By nominating your mum, you can win the chance to say ‘thanks’ by placing her portrait up with the 97.3FM crew on the billboard below on busy Bowen Bridge Road, and winning her one of our fabulous portrait packages! Four lucky runners up will also win a Studio Impressions Portrait package, and the top five will appear in the Sunday Mail (photography courtesy of Studio Impressions of course!).
To enter your mum go the 97.3FM website or click here.
We are so excited to be part of this opportunity to raise awareness of the great work done by the Perinatal Research Centre at the RBWH, and because we can’t wait to photograph such deserving mums!
We have already had a fantastic time photographing the 97.3FM morning crew for the billboard……now to find out the lucky winners……..
Bowral wedding elegance
Apr 16th
It has been a long time since Adam and I have photographed a wedding together, as we are usually shooting separate weddings at the same time! With two out of town weddings in the same weekend, Adam and I both found ourselves in Sydney together, so we took the opportunity to accompany each other on our respective weddings.
The first was the magical wedding of Maria and Jordan at one of the most beautiful places in the country, Bowral, about a two hour drive south west of Sydney. I’ve posted some images that Adam and I took from their day below. Weddings are a reflection of the people that are getting married. This wedding was stamped with Maria and Jordan, and every little detail, including Maria’s stunning dress, complimented the location perfectly. Red, the colour of love.
Maria and Jordan held both the ceremony and reception on the estate, “The Manor house” part of the boutique Peppers retreats. It was so exciting to have some of the most majestic areas in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales as our backdrop. The area has been a popular wedding destination for Sydneysiders for awhile but it’s reputation is spreading. Maria and Jordan traveled from Melbourne to declare their love in this stunning location.
The Manor House was a wonderful destination. If you want to plan your own wedding here you can contact Carrie Blunt at Peppers directly on their website.
Tis the Season to Get Married
Apr 15th
Wedding season is now in full swing and Adam and I are having a ball photographing some beautiful weddings already this year.
It seems when we haven’t had a wedding to photograph, we’ve been busy helping couples plan their big day at some of the many Bridal Fairs on offer this year.
Just recently we saw a fantastic turnout at the Queensland Brides Wedding Expo, where some stunning gowns were on display. Prior to that we attended the Your Local Wedding Guide expo at the new location of the Sofitel, which was fantastic. We’ve also had the pleasure of talking to some lovely couples at the Customs House, Hillstone St Lucia and Old Government House open days. These are all great venues for a wedding, run by people who really know their stuff.
I must say though, all these expos have made me think how tough it must be for a couple these days to choose their wedding suppliers. When you see just how many suppliers there are out there, how can you really tell who is good and who is not so good?
Three years ago I was discussing this dilemma with our friends at Gianni’s Events at Portside (who recently changed their name to Moda Events). We thought, “wouldn’t it be good if we could bring together all the high quality suppliers we know in one location, so that brides could be assured they were getting the best”. The concept of Cocktails, Carats and Couture was born.
The third annual CCC was held in February and, as usual, was an elegant affair. Here are some pics from the night.
Cocktails, and goody bags with perfume from Libertine as the gifts.
Glamorous gowns by Wendy Makin Couture starred in this year’s fashion parade.
Some of the other top notch wedding specialists on hand on the night included Divine Flowers; Rush Entertainment, Stephanie’s Spa Retreat, Sipka Media; Essential Experiences and Events; Your Move Fitness; Urban Weddings; Cakestar; Amini Concepts; Blushed by Steph; Kezani Jewellery; Valiant Furniture hire; and Spectrum Fireworks.
