Adobe Lightroom Adventure Tour

This month I had the opportunity to be one of 15 photographers from around the world on the second instalment of the Adobe Lightroom Adventure tour.  The inaugural adventure tour was in Iceland 2 years ago and was an amazing success.  This year’s tour of Tasmania was no exception and went beyond where the first tour left off.  It was a demanding two weeks of shooting throughout the days and putting Lightroom V2 through its paces throughout the evening.  I loved every minute.   Spending some dedicated time shooting with some of the best photographers in the world just helped to keep everything about my career and my work in perspective.     Thanks Adobe for inviting me to be part of this experience.  I will never forget it.

Here are a couple of my favourite images from the tour.

WPPI – Grand Award

Had a great time again at WPPI catching up with some amazing photographers from around the world.  It is always great to meet so many different wedding photographers and get inspired with great ideas.   Of course the awards are always a fun and challenging part of WPPI, and I am excited to say that this year my prints were successful in nabbing me the GRAND AWARD for the Photojournalism category and first place in Wedding Photojournalism.  I was pretty pleased with my prints this year,  and  delighted at achieving an average of 86.5 points (out of 100) over the 25 prints I submitted.   I’ve included some of my award prints below.

Society XXV

Thank you to XXV for inviting me to become one of their members.   This is a prestigious honour that I am very grateful to have been given.   The Society of Twenty-Five or XXV is an group of the world’s finest photographers with the goal of raising the art of photography to new levels through free exchange of ideas and techniques to members.   It is limited to only 25 photographers from around the globe, so places only come up once in awhile and membership is only by invitation and a rigorous nomination and selection process.     This is a real honour for me, as I am a true believer of growing together through sharing experience and ideas, and to learn from great photographers such as Curt Littlecott and Henk van Kooten.    www.societyofXXV.com

Cocktails, Carats, Couture

Studio Impressions is excited to be involved with Gianni’s Events at Portside and DARB Bridal Couture as hosts of a luxury wedding event aptly named Cocktails, Carats and Couture.

Brisbane today, offers a wealth of bridal and wedding services and like many industries, it can sometimes be hard to trawl through the huge number of suppliers to find those that are truly offering exceptional quality and service.

As hosts and usually one of the first contact points for planning a wedding, we felt that Brisbane Brides would benefit from an event that brought together some of the best in the industry.  Between our Studio, DARB and Gianni’s we had over 40 years experience in the wedding industry and interestingly found ourselves often recommending the same suppliers .  This is because after years of working with them we knew they had the expertise and we could trust the quality of what they would produce for our brides.

Cocktails, Carats and Couture brought all these suppliers together at one luxury event.   Fashion, fine food and diamonds featured at this invitation only cocktail party.  Past bridal couples were invited as a thank you and brides and grooms-to-be were given the chance to to talk informally to some of the best wedding specialists Brisbane has to offer and to the couples that used them before.

It was a great night, and looks like becoming an annual event.    Thanks to Gianni’s Events at Portside, DARB Bridal Couture and all the participating wedding specialists for their involvement.

Christmas Cards

2007 Studio Impressions Christmas card

Our Studio Christmas card started out as a bit of fun years ago when we decided with tongue-in-cheek, to photograph ourselves for the card! Now it has turned into an annual photographic shoot of our staff with a bit of an unofficial internal competition for the craziest Christmas idea. We like to not take ourselves too seriously and 2007 was no different.

Governor’s Xmas Card

Seem’s like we aren’t the only ones that want to be on our own Christmas Card! Having met Her Excellency the Governor of Queensland Quentin Bryce when I photographed her son’s wedding, I had a brief conversation with her where I suggested some ideas for a Christmas Card that I thought would portray the kind caring and approachable Governor that she has been to the Queensland public, as well as send a message about the importance of family and the joy of children at Christmas. This brief conversation led to the chance to photograph the official Queensland Government House Christmas Card. It is great to be able to do meaningful, elegant portraits like this and then go and do something fun like our snow-globe card in the same week!

The Wonder of Technology

Bell Boys printing Christmas prints

This year my wife Penny wanted to give her Dad a small album of images of our kids.  Like all craftsmen, I am great at printing photos for others and not so good at printing out the hundreds I take of my own family.   So desperate my wife became to actually see some of the photos we have taken in the past 3 years of our boys’ lives that we bought a little picture mate so she could print out our happy snaps herself – rather than waiting for me or just trawling through hundreds of images on my laptop.

It constantly amazes me how quickly advances in technology happen that we can now, from the comfort of our own home, print out photographs ourselves.    While the quality is nothing like a professionally worked and printed image, it sure is fun to see the wonder on my boys’ faces when a photo of themselves comes out of the printer.

Bringing photography to life

Describes what we do. This blog is about exactly that - here we will share a little of our life and a lot of what we love - people, art and photography. Whether you are planning a wedding, a family portrait or building your own professional photography business, I hope you find something to inspire you here. Thank you for visiting.
