Junebug weddings photographer spotlight
Sep 29th
Junebug Weddings is an incredible site to visit. It was launched earlier this year and has quickly become one of the world’s top wedding sites. I feel honored to be included in this months Photographers spotlight. You can read the full interview here.
Lunch with the Lord Mayor
Sep 1st
What a week!
I have just spent an unbelievable time in Indonesia for work. That is, if you call attending someone’s wedding (as photographer), hanging out with some of the nicest people you could meet and taking photos of their family, snapping some cool fashion for a magazine and learning about one of the most impressive photography studios I have ever seen – “work”. Sometimes I forget how unreal my job is. My head’s still spinning so I will post more about this trip later, along with some of my favourite shots. Enough boasting, what I really wanted to write about was what was going on back here! No, I’m not talking about the election (who wants to anymore?).
One of the things I missed out on was the opportunity to have lunch with Lord Mayor Campbell Newman at the Brisbane Powerhouse. For a number of years Studio Impressions has been helping the Powerhouse with their publicity by capturing some of the cool events they have on, and letting them use these shots for their promotional material. We think the Powerhouse is an essential part of keeping Brisbane’s art community thriving, and we want to do our bit. Photographers grow if they are surrounded by talent, art, inspiration. This place and the people it brings to our city give me inspiration.
The lunch was to say Thank You to those businesses that sponsor and support the Powerhouse and to unveil their upcoming Program. Penny & Nicola went to represent Studio Impressions & they tell me lunch was great and the program of events for September – December 2010 is outstanding! Check it out for yourself – www.brisbanepowerhouse.org/events
This year the Brisbane Powerhouse turned 10. What a year it has been so far. We’ve had a great time photographing some really diverse events. Here are some of our favourites so far….

Congratulations | “Brisbane’s best MUM”
May 10th
Congratulations to Leanne Philipsen!! The winner of the 97.3FM Sunday Mail RBWH Thanks Mum Competition and now the 2010 face of the RBWH Mother’s Day Appeal.
Leanne is an amazing woman. She is mum to four children of her own and eight foster children! Leanne was nominated by her daughter Kylie who has just become a mum herself. Now Leanne’s kids can be proud every time they drive down Bowen Bridge road, where her portrait graces a huge billboard directly across the road from the RBWH!
The winner was announced live on air by 97.3FM on Friday at the unveiling of the billboard, and we were there to capture the excitement!

We have had a fantastic time photographing the five finalists of the Thanks Mum competition, and helping raise awareness and much needed funds for perinatal research undertaken by the Perinatal Research Centre at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
Each of these ladies are amazing in their own right, and it was a real privilege to give them a chance to feel special. Their day of pampering started at Hare’s Hair where they had their hair done. Then off to us at the studio where they enjoyed some champagne while Bruce Rehbein of Makeup Master did the makeup. They chose their favourite outfit, before we started the possible “billboard shot” and then did some outside portraits.
Each of these women deserved to win.
Leanne came to the Studio feeling a little nervous about having her photograph taken as she had never had a professional portrait taken before. However by the end of the photo shoot, Leanne was relaxed and having such a great time, although she was conscious of getting to school to collect the kids – I guess it’s true that a mother’s work is never done!
Frances was nominated by her daughter-in-law Stacey, who came along with grandson Jack to support Frances for the Portrait session. Frances needed no encouragement, she was a natural in front of the lens. It was an exciting day for Frances’ grandson Jack who was celebrating his third birthday. He thought it was great eating cakes and chocolates while watching his Nanny Fran smile and pose for the camera.
Julia was both surprised and impressed with her oldest son Andrew who, at just 26 years old, nominated her as Brisbane’s best mum. They have had both dealt with serious illness and this was his way of saying ‘Thanks mum’. Julia said she holds a very strong bond with both of her boys and couldn’t have asked for a better mother’s day gift.
Teresa had wanted to become a teacher from an early age but, like many mothers, had put her families needs first. At 49 years old Teresa fulfilled her dream and completed a teaching degree and is now happily teaching a year four class at a North Brisbane school. It was her eldest daughter Emma who is also a teacher who nominated Teresa.
Kelli was nominated by her husband of 17 years Jason, who came along with Kelli for the portrait session. Kelli jokingly referred to Jason as her chauffeur as she sipped on champagne and had her make up done. Jason looked adoringly at Kelli the whole time. You could tell he loved her just as when they were married 17 years ago!
Happy Mother’s Day to you all!
Mother’s Day Appeal
Apr 17th
Mother’s Day is fast approaching and I don’t know about you, but I am frantically trying to think of a gift, from my boys of course, that will suit their mum. Nothing seems to even come close to saying thanks for all she has done this last year.
Something that I can’t give Penny, but is available to everyone else, is the ultimate way to say thanks to their mum. This year we have joined forces with the RBWH Foundation, 97.3FM and the Sunday Mail, to say Thanks to some of Brisbane’s most deserving mums, and raise much needed funds for perinatal research. By nominating your mum, you can win the chance to say ‘thanks’ by placing her portrait up with the 97.3FM crew on the billboard below on busy Bowen Bridge Road, and winning her one of our fabulous portrait packages! Four lucky runners up will also win a Studio Impressions Portrait package, and the top five will appear in the Sunday Mail (photography courtesy of Studio Impressions of course!).
To enter your mum go the 97.3FM website or click here.
We are so excited to be part of this opportunity to raise awareness of the great work done by the Perinatal Research Centre at the RBWH, and because we can’t wait to photograph such deserving mums!
We have already had a fantastic time photographing the 97.3FM morning crew for the billboard……now to find out the lucky winners……..
Nitai in 2020 BMX Mag
Sep 16th
Every photographer at Studio Impressions has a diverse portfolio. Nitai Whitehurst who is a great wedding photographer and also our post-production king, has probably a more diverse portfolio than most.
Outside of Studio Impressions Nitai is a brilliant sports photographer who specialises in BMX. He has been featured in many magazines, but we are especially excited because one of his shots has just made the cover of 2020 BMX Magazine - which is probably the biggest BMX mag in Australia!
Shot on Canon EOS 1d Mark III with Pocket Wizards and 2 Elinchrom Rangers. Nitai got it at iso 100 at 1/250th @ 5.6. Here’s the shot…….
To find out more about Nitai’s BMX work visit his website www.nitaiphoto.com To see his wedding portfolio – visit us at Studio Impressions!
