Sydney Wedding – Lauren & Allan
Nov 15th
Last night I was looking through some old CDs and found one I hadn’t listened to for ages and put it on while I worked on some of Lauren & Allan’s wedding images. When the last track started playing I had to smile. It was the song that played during the ceremony the day I married Penny. The song is “True Companion” by Marc Cohn. It is now such an old song, but it still describes how I feel about choosing someone to spend the rest of your life with. Looking through Lauren & Allan’s images with this song playing in the background just made me think how amazing it is that amongst all the people that we pass every day, two people who are obviously meant to be together, can find each other. Just like Lauren & Allan.
Lauren & Allan had a great wedding – elegant, glamorous, intimate and modern. Breaking from tradition, they met before the ceremony and had some photos together, just the two of them. Seeing each other for the first time without a crowd around them was such a private and special moment. It was a real privilege for me to witness a moment in their lives that I know they will always remember. It also gave them a chance to reflect on all the fun they have had leading up to the day while we took some snaps at one of their favourite places Zeta Bar in the Hilton, Sydney. The Hilton was also where Lauren got ready while Allan got ready just a little distance away at the Westin.
Despite crazy hot weather the day before, Sydney put on a cold & wet day. But Lauren and her butterfly-inspired bridesmaids shone through the rain and lit up the Sergeants Mess in Chowder Bay where they had their ceremony & reception. Brilliant place! Centrepiece by design added sparkle to the room with some beautiful reception decor and Veritas did a fantastic job of ensuring that Lauren & Allan had a perfect wedding day. Lauren’s gorgeous dress was by MXM and flowers by Lil Blossom. A band made up of friends of Lauren & Allan’s rocked the reception and then the couple themselves really shook things up with one of the best choreographed wedding dances I have ever seen. What a way to get the party started! And it didn’t stop until the wee hours with an after party at The Ivy. I loved this wedding because I got to see many sides of this couple – the couple that like to have fun & mix it up a bit and then the couple they are when alone – gentle & in love – true companions maybe?
A couple of weeks ago Penny & I celebrated 15 years of marriage, and it still feels like we have only known each other for a short time. Lauren & Allan, I wish that 15 years from now you one day hear a song that takes you back to this day, and realise happily, that it really seems no time at all.

Found Treasure
Nov 3rd
I woke up this morning and my weekend photography project had disappeared – loaded onto the back of a truck and taken to be recycled, dumped, buried, discarded. Little parts of people’s lives forming one large pile of rubble.
It had been council curbside collection week in our local area and as I carted our junk onto the footpath I couldn’t help but notice the buzz all this “junk” had created. People coming from everywhere to rummage through other people’s trash, marvelling at the treasures they discovered and carted away to serve a new life in someone else’s home. Amongst all this happening there was an underlying dimension that speaks volumes about people – it says much about who you are, who your neigbours are. What does what we throw away say about us? Couldn’t help myself, grabbed my camera & asked the questions.
Here are a few of the images, each one with a story to tell. You’ll find an old couch – how many stories would those chairs tell? What life did they bring to that family? The entire furnishings of a baby’s room – a new phase in the life of this family perhaps? A lone vacuum cleaner hose – what happened to the vaccuum that it belongs to? What of the image you will see of the disgarded beer and golfballs? The stories that could tell. Or maybe there is no story here. Just random pieces of various lives thrown on the sidewalk – a sad indictment to our disposable society.
For me curbside collection is like a cleanse – a fresh start, a change. So when I took these images I could not help but feel a sense of renewal in my neighboured, reinforced as I watched people load their new found treasures into the back of their car. Everything old is new again.

Love you forever | Vanessa & Robert wedding at Spicers Peak
Oct 28th
Two nights ago, after a late wedding enquiry, I arrived home just on bedtime for my 3 little boys. One of my 6 year old, Evan, had a book under his arm and pleaded for me to read it to him. If only I’d realised I was being set up. I confess that I am not the best of readers, but a children’s book is usually within my grasp… until this book. Like all good children’s books this one had a solid, repeatable theme. Except this “theme” hit me hard and I had to stop reading at about page 5. I found myself getting all choked up over a kids book. Evan put his little arm on my shoulder & said “Oh Daddy, it’s okay”. So I took a deep breath & tried again. But a few more pages & I was a hopeless mess so instead I gave up reading, hugged my boy & whispered in his ear the title of this book “Love You Forever”. ”It’s okay Daddy. I love you too”.
Back in our living room I said to Penny “That book Evan picked, I couldn’t finish it”. Matter-of-factly she replied with, “Don’t worry. No one can.”. Seems she has also struggled to reach the end of this one, and went on to tell me that she had seen this book read by an MC to a room full of 300 mums. The MC couldn’t finish it & every woman in the room was crying. Perhaps I had been set up by my 6 year old? And, I suspect, my wife (although Penny denies any involvement). On a night when I work late my six year old chooses a book that reminds me what is really important in life. Hmmm?
What a remarkable book. A book that no parent can finish. ”Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Anthony Lewis. If you have kids, read it. Hey, if you don’t have kids, read it. I challenge you not to cry.
So what has this book got to do with Vanessa and Robert’s wedding? Well everything. This is a book about love, family, parents, children, human companionship, human sharing and the cycle of life. Marriage is part of that and a wedding is like the convergence of all these things on one memorable day. It is what I saw at Vanessa & Robert’s wedding. In Robert’s speech, he spoke about how so many events had coincided so that he and Vanessa would meet at just the most perfect time in their lives to meet – fate. He also spoke about all the people dear to them, especially his father. “I am proud to be your son”. My heart swelled when I heard this because earlier in the day, through my lens, I could see the impact Robert’s Dad had on him & the bond they shared. It was there, in the pictures in front of me and it was just so good to hear him say it. ’Cause sometimes we forget, you know, to say it.
There is so much richness in life. People see and express it in different ways. For some it is in the clothes they wear, or the car they drive or the house they live in. But true richness, I believe, is measured in the love you share and with who you hold dear to your heart. Surrounded by family & true friends, a handful of people and things dear to them, Vanessa and Robert’s wedding was filled with this kind of richness. Looking at their photos today it reminded me how that short children’s book could so simply point out what life (and weddings) is really all about. I suppose that is why I couldn’t finish it – because the words were so simple and so powerful that all I could do was admire them and reflect on what they meant to me. That is also what I hope for my photographs – that they are powerful reminders of what is great and important in life and that they have long lasting personal meaning to the people in them.
Thank you Evan and Vanessa and Robert for pulling back the blinkers I wear in peak wedding season and reminding me again why I want to do this job so well. Vanessa and Robert, I look forward to the day that you read this book to your beautiful little boy, and then I get a call…”Marcus, I couldn’t finish it.”
And I know that when you all look at these photos so many of you will want to know….Vanessa’s dress was by Darb, her shoes & bag by Jimmy Choo. Those beautiful flowers by Mondo Floral Design. Aurelie from our studio second shot and captured some remarkable images, like the hand and the chopper. Trudy from Lovebird Weddings did an amazing job helping Vanessa and Robert plan the biggest (and I would say the most beautiful) wedding that Spicers Peak Lodge has ever done. This venue is truly stunning and is one of Vanessa and Robert’s favourite places to escape. Imagine escaping for a day with all the special people in your life, eating great food, dancing, laughing, and actually telling people that they are special to you? How good would that feel? Just ask Vanessa & Robert.

BALI in Black and White
Oct 25th
It’s no secret that I love travelling to Bali, be it to photograph a wedding, a portrait, or even just to holiday. It is one of my favourite places on Earth. Over the years I have made many great friendships there and found that Bali is whatever you want to make of it. Just like anywhere else, beyond the tourist strip lies a whole different place where the day to day life of the people that live there varies so much from the places we tourists frequent. There are so many faces to Bali that my two favourite things to do when I’m not working are to enjoy an incredible sunset over the water or to venture into the back streets and take a little glimpse of the people that call Bali home.

Sara & Zac’s Hillstone Wedding
Oct 20th
Adam recently photographed the wedding of Sara & Zac, a great couple with smiles that warm your heart. Adam took some stunning images of their ceremony at St John’s Cathedral. I love these images because you can feel the combination of the intensity of their love and the seriousness of the commitment that Sara and Zac are making to each other in these images. Sometimes with all the detail we forget just how momentous this day is, and how important the ceremony is. Adam has done a great job of capturing this. Sara & Zac had their reception at Hillstone St Lucia, which, as always, looked absolutely gorgeous and decorated the grand ballroom especially for them. Zac and Sara incorporated a very special touch to their day. Zac is Bulgarian so the highlight of the reception was a Bulgarian band and dancing until the wee hours.
Thanks Sara & Zac for choosing Studio Impressions to photograph your very special day. May your smiles stretch on forever.
